Research results

A Late Bronze Age socketed spearhead found just underneath the turf of an uncertain Barrow in Amesbury, part of Richard Colt Hoare's Group 14, near Stone Henge. Excavated in the early 19th century by William Cunnington, and purchased by the museum in 1883, as part of the Stourhead Collection. The spearhead is notable for being one of relatively few later Bronze Age artefacts from the Stonehenge landscape, but its location is unfortunately currently unknown. The spearhead has been missing since at least 1964, and was probably stolen during a major robbery in the 1930s.
