Description

Summary: The ceramic vessel assemblage found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. Sherds from context J1, the fill of a late Roman grave. The group comprises of 4 iron age sherds and 6 larger Romano-British sherds, inlcuding the base of a beaker and the rim of a jar with an everted rim.

Research results

The ceramic vessel assemblage from context J1, found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. Context J1 was the fill of a late roman burial, who had been buried wearing hobnail boots, the 10 pottery sherds from the fill include residual iron age sherds, as well as later roman sherds which support the late date of the grave suggested by the hobnails.
