Description

Summary: 7 colour and 16 black and white photographs of Bedwyn Hill and it's inhabitants, Froxfield, Wiltshire. Colour photographs, all exterior views. 1 - 6 - views looking down onto the village from Bedwyn Hill, among the buildings and areas visible are: Swallowfield, The Rectory, the Church, The School, Bath Road cottages, Hill House, Village Hall, Green Farm, Manor Park, Thackets, Forge Cottages and The Limes. 7 - view lookiing up Bedwyn Hill, to the right can be seen three former cottages that became the National School until a new school was built in 1910. Black and white photographs, all but 23 are exterior views. 8, 9 and 10 - views lokking down onto the village from Bedwyn Hill, among the buidings and areas visible are: The Old Rectory garden, the cottage at Church Corner, and two barns on the village hall site, the school building is absent in (8) but visible in (9). 11 and 12 - similar views looking down the road on Bedwyn Hill but decases apart, 11 - shows workmen carting chalk from the nearby pit. 12 - the same stretch of road prior to 1934/5 when "Sunnydene" was built. 13 - the National School in disrepair following the building of the new school, the old school bell can be seen next to one of the chimneys. 14 and 15 - a panoramic view of the bottom of Bedwyn Hill, showing the baker's shop and Bath Road cottages. 16, 17, 18 - views of the cottages going up Bedwyn hill, each shows the old school. 16 - a group of small boys outside the school, of the two cottages opposite, one was occupied by German POW's , the other by Mr and Mrs J Dobson, during the winter of 1947 the POW's cottage burned down, The Methodist Chapel can be seen in the background. 17 - groups of boys and girls coming out of school, Mrs Jasper Chapman? and Mrs Mildenhall? looking on, the spac to the left is now occupied by Mr and Mrs S Bailey's bungalow.18 - the cottages from botom right of the photograph were once occupied by Mr Bob Lye (saddler), Mr and Mrs A Mildenhall, Mrs Raizey, a young lady, two small children and two boys beside a bicycle are facing the camera. 19 - more cottages on Bedwyn Hill. 20 - Mr George Burton outside The Old Cross Keys. 21 - Mrs Raizey and her son Jack outside their cottage on Bedwyn Hill. 22 - The opening of The Methodist Chapel on Bedwyn Hill in 1909, a large group of villagers are gathered to witness the unlocking of the door. 23 - the interior of the Methodist Chapel during Harvest Festival.
