brooch

Description

Summary: 1 medieval silver-gilt annular brooch, disintergrated into four separate parts. The pin, however, remains intact, though bent. The frame of the brooch returns four high collets, one still set with a purple stone, possibly a garnet. The collets are attached to the frame by bands of flat foliate decoration, which spring from oval bosses. The brooch looks like it has been burnt. Dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. Found at Alton, Wiltshire.
