Description

Summary: The ceramic vessel assemblage found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. Sherds from context A2, the fill of a linear ditch interpretted as a droveway. The assemblage contains 14 later Prehistoric sherds and 1 Romano-British Sherd. This includes a 2 fitting sherds from an iron age jar with fingernail impressions and red, burnished fabric.

Research results

The ceramic vessel assemblage from context A2, found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. The context is interpereted as the deliberate fill of a droveway ditch, probably during the Roman period, but using material derived from an Iron Age midden.
