Research results

Marshall et al. (2020) have recently published the results of a Radiocarbon dating scheme carried out on the site in 2005. A single sherd with carbonised residues was submitted for radiocarbon dating (K/III/(6)/P23), and dated to 4701 +/- 34 BP (3630-3370 cal BC).

The ceramic assemblage from excavations on Knap Hill, Alton, excavated by Graham Connah and the University of Cambridge in 1961. The 1961 excavations recovered a small assemblage of 16 neolithic sherds and 22 beaker sherds, as well as 63 Romano-British sherds and post-Roman vessel sherds in the upper fills of the ditch. The neolithic pottery is all of early neolithic forms and no peterborough ware was identified, confirming the short period of neolithic occupation. The Romano-British and post-Roman assemblages were discussed only extremely briefly: the former comprising mostly of coarse wares and containing a single sherd of Savernake ware and one late flanged bowl.
