Description

Content summary: 16 November 1800: John Britton to William Cunnington- is sending him a parcel containing his Manuscript with description of Heytesbury, Warminster, Salisbury etc... but is finding it all 'more complex' than he had imagined. He reports that he is finding contradictions and erros in Camden Gough, Magna Britannica etc. relating to Wiltshire which he wishes to correct. He is reading and writing for 16-18 hours a day. He has found a copy of Inigo Jones' 'Stonehenge' which he will send him, 'this work may be abound with conjecture, false hypotheses, so does Stukeley's... If you would like to have this work pray let me know. I shall insist upon your acceptance.' JB sends his MSS, and has received the honey, but the jar is broken though 'it is all safe.' He sent a description of Longleat to Mr Davis for his remarks and the introductory account of the country around Stourhead for Sir Richard Colt Hoare. He hopes to visit WmC bringing with him all the published views of Stonehenge for him to see. 'I trust my conduct will never offend your good nature. I have surmounted many difficultures and insults in the progress of the work, but a determined resolution to surmount them and a zealous anxiety to render reputable and handsome execution and creditable to myself has made me perservere. Your conduct towards me from the first moment of acquaintance your letters etc. have given me muc comfort- accept my thanks.'
