Research results

22 sherds of prehistoric pottery, excavated from Beckhampton Road Longbarrow by Paul Ashbee in 1964. The sherds are reduced with a black core and surface, with patches of dark brown, and a fine grained, quartz-sand temper. The sherds join to form a mostly complete small jar comparable to vessels from nearby All Cannings Cross, and the fact it was deposited complete suggests it may have contained a cremation, or have been a deliberate votive offering. It was found buried in the fill of the south ditch of the long barrow.
