Description

Summary: The ceramic vessel assemblage found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. Sherds from context H7, part of the fill of a T-shaped corn drier or malting oven, containing 16 Roman sherds and 2 Iron Age sherds, the former including decorated samian and a Black Burnished Ware flanged bowl.

Research results

The ceramic vessel assemblage from context H7, found during excavation of the Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age and Romano-British Settlement at 'Black Furlong', Blacklands, Calne Without, ahead of the excavation of a slurry pit in 2005. Context H7 was part of the fill of a T-shaped corn drier or malting oven, containing 16 Roman sherds and 2 Iron Age sherds, the former including decorated samian and a Black Burnished Ware flanged bowl. The oven probably went out of use in the later Roman period.
