Description

Content summary: 7 June 1806 : copy of a letter from William Cunnington to A B Lambert – he has been exploring the British Camps & Villages around Everly, Upavon, Marden, Devizes & Roundway Hill, but has opened only two or three. 'The most important work I have seen lately is the work of Marden which I consider as having been erected for religious purposes …... This great Earthen work is now much mutilated and the area is intersected with hedgerows but in its pristine state must have been a grand work – It originally consisted of a fine vallum in the form of a Crescent having the river for its base. The Foss (contrary to all Military Works) is within a line extended over the vallum measures112 feet the area of this great Work contains 30 acres or more Within the area on the Eastern side is the largest circular Tumulus in England if we except Silbury Hill. On extending a line over it from Ditch to Ditch it measured 483 feet. I believe it covers nearly an acre of ground & but for having been repeatedly ploughed over it is now much lower than it was about 50 years ago South West of the enormous Barrow is a singular Work (circular) not much unlike Stukeley's Druid Barrows.'
