Description

Identification note: Stephen Goddard:Collections Information & Standards Officer. National Maritime Museum. \nIn 1984 Bryn Walters of the Littlecote Roman Research Trust deposited with the National Maritime Museum Archaeology Research Centre a wooden storage tank from the Littlecote site for conservation treatment. This was recorded as a loan and the NMM retained the timbers until 2000, after the ARC had closed, when some of them were conserved by the Mary Rose Trust and NMM records suggest they were sent on to Wiltshire Heritage Museum. However we still seem to hold some of the timbers here (they would appear to be the sides of the tank and an additional structural timber) as well as some nails and a small folder of papers. We would ideally like to re-unite these items with the rest of the Littlecote site archive. Returned to Wiltshire Museum (Amesbury Store - 30th November 2022)

Summary: Wooden storage tank (now in four pieces) and a box of iron nails, from Littlecote Roman Villa, Littlecote House, near Hungerford in east Wiltshire. The villa was excavated in 1978–1991. The work was directed by Bernard Phillips & Bryn Walters. It is a site of major importance, with substantial Saxon, medieval and post-medieval remains as well as the Roman villa.
