Description

Summary: 29 black and white photographs and 11 colour photographs of the people and places of Oakhill, Froxfield, Wiltshire. Photographs are black and white unless stated otherwise. 1 - colour photograph of Riverview houses, Blue Lion. 2 - Elizabeth Holms and a boy taken in 1909 outside of the cottages opposite Upper Oakhill, they were later destroyed by fire. 3 - a young girl, Mrs Millie Huntley, in the garden at Blue Lion cottages c. 1918, she is standing with a lovely dolls' pram. 4 - Mrs Bowsher standing at the garden gate of her mother's, Mrs Stagg, cottage in Blue Lion cottages. 5 - believed to be Mr Derek Smiley driving a Massey-Harris combine harvester at Upper Oakhill. 6 - Mr Tom Hunter on his tractor at Upper Oakhill. 7 - Mr Bert Bell grass cutting with his tractor at Upper Oakhill farm. 8-11 - Upper Oakhill cottages. 8 - the cottages in the early 1950's, occupied by (l-r) Mrs V Heaver, Bella Pounds and Mr and Mrs Bert Ball. 9 - a late 50's winter, Di Scott on her sledge, a steam train in the background. 10 - Joan and Jean Scott at the cottage gate outside their home. 11- Mr Jack Pounds with his family at 160 Upper Oakhill, (l-r) Win, Bella, Jack, Mrs Pounds and Lil, seated in front is Ruth, Win's daughter. 12-15 - Lower Oakhill. 12 - a panoramic view of the cottages at Lower Oakhill, the two bridges (canal and railway) with Stype Woods in the background. 13 - Mr Leslie Huntley's mother at the door of her Lower Oakhill cottage. 14 - Mr Jim Harrison at the door of his Lower Oakhill cottage. 15 - another view of Mr and Mrs Jim Harrison's cottage. 16 - a young Eric King sitting by the barn at Oakhill Farm, 1933. 17 - Oakhill Farm c. 1935. 18-21 - Blue Lion cottages. 18 - Mr Tommy Kingston and Mr Charlie Mildenhall chatting at the gate of Tommy's cottage. 19 - looking down the Old Bath Road, Mrs Stagg can be seen at her cottage door before the war, during the war years the cottages were occupied by Mr and Mrs C Mildenhall, Mr and Mrs Porter, Mr H Pike, Mr and Mrs Kington and Mr and Mrs Kingston. 20 - looking up the Old Bath Road, a gentleman and his dog are walking past the cottages. 21 - teas and refreshments at Blue Lion cottages. 22-25 - The Pelican Inn. 22 - The Pelican Inn c.1938. 23 - patrons of the Pelican Inn (l-r) Mrs Heaver, Mr Vic Heaver holding darts, Mr Reg Naish, Mrs Woosnam (wife of landlord), Mr Arthur Naish holding darts, His sisters Mary and Dorothy and Mr Tom Hunter, the seated lady in the foreground is unknown. 24 ans 25 - colour photographs, exterior views of The Pelican Inn. 26-28 - the lock-house. 26 - the Hunt family outside the lock-house on the canal tow-path c. 1921 when Mr Hunt was the lock keeper. 27 - a young Polly Freeman seated on the path of the lock-house. 28 - the lock-house and lock. 29-34 - the Kennet and Avon Canal. 29 - a working barge on the canal passing upper Oakhill. 30 and 31 - similar views of the canal in the early 1900's, the canal and railway bridges and fisherman's cottages can be seen in the midground. 32-34 - colour photographs of the Kennet and Avon canal to the east of the village. 35 and 36 - one black and white and one colour view of the two bridges (canal and railway) from the road. 37-40 colour photographs. 37 - looking towards Trinkle Down woods. 38 - looking towards the cottage at the bottom of Trinkle Down Lane from the Stype woods road. 39 - the water meadows behind Oakhill Farm. 40 - the chalk stream at the rear of Oakhill farm.
