Description

Summary: 1 perforated whetstone of fine sandstone (bored for suspension and nearly square in section) from a cremation in an unlocated barrow in Knighton Down, Broadchalke, excavated by William Cunnington

Research results

A Bronze Age perforated whetstone excavated from an unlocated barrow on Knighton Down, Broad Chalke, by William Cunnington. Similar whetstones are often found with bronze age burial groups and display signs of wear, suggesting they had been used to sharpen blades. The whetstone is a sandstone with an uncertain provenance, but possibly local. Traces of copper alloy corrosion near the perforation suggest that the stone had been in contact with a metal object in the grave.
