Research results

144 lignite beads from a Bronze Age disc bead necklace. The beads were found with the primary inhumation of bowl barrow Preshute G1a, excavated by Howard Cunnington in 1907. This wealthy grave belonged to an elderly woman who had been buried crouched on her side; the beads were found in a small heap near the head of the burial, alongside a fossil bead, some decayed amber beads, a pendant of gold and amber, a halberd pendant and a gold bound shale bead, suggesting that they originally formed part of an elaborate composite necklace.
