Content summary: 10 December 1801 : John Britton in London to William Cunnington – 'you say that the Altar stone or that so call'd was chiselled like the others. Are you quite certain of this? Do you think it ever stood erect? Is there any appearance of fire on it? - or do you think it was carefully fixt in its present position? Have you any specimens of it? If you can spare me a small piece, with the same of the other stones mentioning from what stone it was taken? …. Are you convinced that the large stone in the ditch in the Ditch was once erect & was it chiselled?
