hooked tag

Description

Summary: Early medieval - medieval, 6th to 9th century AD, silver hooked tag with two attachment holes. The plate is decorated on the front with incised lines. At the centre is an inexpertly drawn plant motif, with five leaves. The reverse of the plate is undecorated. At the junction of the plate and hook are mouldings which look like a stylised animal head. The decoration is probably inspired by Carolingian art, based on the acanthus leaf motif. Found with the use of a metal detector in 1997/8, in the parish of Heddington, Wiltshire.
