Description

Summary: Archive associated with an archaeological excavation on land at The Pippin, Calne, Wiltshire, 2021, by Worcestershire Archaeology. Stratigraphically the earliest features comprised a ditch\nand two parallel gullies which were orientated at a different angle to the later burgage plots. These features were likely to be either late Saxon, or very early\nmedieval, in origin. Following the imposition of long (medieval) burgage plots, these plots eventually became subdivided\nto front and rear. To the rear (ie east), there were the well-preserved remains of a lime kiln, including\nsubstantial walls and a stoke-hole. After a period of possible later medieval decline, several new stone walls divided the plots from north\nto south in the post-medieval period, which defined their northern and southern edges.
