Description

Summary: 59 coins from the Bishops Cannings hoard, used for XRF analysis. These coins form part of a hoard of 7,407 late Roman coins (1 gold, 1,569 silver and 5,837 bronze) found alongside gold and silver jewellery and copper artefacts at Blagan Hill, Bishops Cannings, Wiltshire; the site was excavated by Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society's Field Group between 1992-1994

Identification note: These coins were returned to the museum in September 2023, by Sam Moorhead, British Museum. They had been removed from the museum in 2003, for XRF analysis. A further 29 coins (deemed to be not from the hoard by Dr Paul Robinson, are also contained within the box. Sam Moorhead believes they may be part of the hoard........ )
