Description

Summary: A stone axe made of emery or corudum attributed to Naxos or a near-by island in the Aegean, and has been mentioned as an instance of Aegean relations with Britain in the Bronze Age. This implement has however, been discussed with Aegean archaeologists who express the view that it could scarcely be dated later than about 2500 BC and that it is worth considering whether it might have been brought into this country in comparatively recent times by a tourist. The implement was acquired by the Devizes Museum in 1876 and appears to have no other history. Its status as a true archaeological find is therefore uncertain.
