Description

Summary: Framed gouache on paper entitled, Stonehenge Stage 1. 3000-2920BC, by artist Peter Dunn. The bank and ditch of Stonehenge were constructed and a ring of bluestones erected in the Aubrey holes. There were three entrances and settings of timber posts and stones in the centre and across the northeast entrance. Some of these may have been aligned on the solar axis and the major rising and setting of the moon, and to restrict access into the centre of the monument. This painting shows these settings, which are often overlooked or dismissed, - they are difficult but I think their purpose reflects the original significance of Stonehenge, probably a purpose before the ditch and bank. These settings are then reflected in, and enclosed by the later sarsen and bluestone settings. Signed by the artist and dated 2011.\n
