Summary: A pair of copper alloy button brooches excavated from an Anglo-Saxon grave at Barrow Clump by Operation Nightingale, 2012-2014.

Research results

A pair of non-identical copper alloy button brooches, found with the burial of a young woman of around 18-21 during excavations of an Early Medieval burial ground at Barrow Clump, excavated by Operation Nightingale, 2012-14. The brooches are of a type dated to the 6th century, and depict stylised human masks. The smaller is of a type whose distribution is centred on Wessex, the larger is more typical of Kent and France, although outliers are known in Wessex.
