Description

Summary: A collection of material once belonging to Miss Mary Niblett, a V.A.D (Voluntary Aid Detachment) Nurse, who provided care for military personnel during World War Two. The V.A.D sytem was set up before World War One, with help from the British Red Cross. Miss Niblett's family farmed in Highworth, Ashton Keynes and Cerney Wick. Mary enlisted with the V.A.D in 1941 and nursed in many Military Hostpials and Casualty Clearing Stations across the UK, eventually ending her service in a British Military Hospital in Italy. She was discharged from nursing duties in Taunton in 1946. Items in the collection include a Demob kit bag; Mary's uniform (skirt, jacket and belt) along with cloth badges; Defence and War medals and armbands; identity documents; movement orders; various Red Cross certificates. A black and white photograph of Mary Niblett is also included in the collection. Mary's time in Italy is well documented with postcards and photographs.
