pendant

Description

Summary: Early Medieval gold and garnet pendant, made from a dark red cabochon gemstone, which is probably a re-used Roman garnet. The garnet is set in a gold frame surrounded by beaded wire. The suspension loop is made from sheet gold and decorated with parallel ridges. The garnet has two large cracks and several chips missing. Pendants like these typically date to the 7th AD and formed part of high status necklaces. Found in Hullavington, 2022..
