Research results

The flint assemblage from excavations on Knap Hill, Alton, excavated by Graham Connah and the University of Cambridge in 1961. The 1961 excavations recovered a large assemblage of 2,759 flints, although a very large proportion are primary flakes and only twelve can be recognised as tools, all of which are scrapers. A large portion of the assemblage comes from the upper fills of the enclosure ditch, and it suggests that primary flint working (and presumably exploitation of local flint) was occuring either within the enclosure, or in the area of the enclosure ditch and subsequently eroded into the ditch.
