Description

Summary: 11th century grave-marker from St Mary’s Church in Potterne. A small rectangular slab of Bath stone with a cross carved in deep relief. The marker was possibly found during the 19th century restoration of the church, or at any time when a grave was dug either in the church or in the churchyard. The existing church was built around AD 1250, but a previous timber building near the same site in about AD 950.
