Description

Identification note: attached to the drawing is the following note in pencil: "During one of Dr Saml P Woodward's visits to Devizes in Apl he went with several of our family and Mr P Anstie Junr for an excursion to the valley of rocks (Sarsen Stones) beyond Avebury. Just as we had finished our dinner, one of the horses ran away - Woodward made this sketch of the incident - It gives a correct representation of the stones as they were. Few are now to be seen on the spot. This particular place was chosen for the convenient size of the stones for picnic purposes - Farther up the valley they are larger and more numerous." VN
