Research results

A charcoal sample taken during excavations of Beckhampton Road Long Barrow, by Paul Ashbee in 1964. The sample comes from a spread of charcoal on the premound surface, it was identified as oak (Quentus robur) and was radiocarbon dated to 3250 +/- 160 BC, around 700 years earlier than an antler thought to have been used as a tool during the construction of the mound. It should however be bore in mind that this result is now at least 40-50 years old, and could be refined if redated to modern standards.
