Wilmington Long Man, Eastbourne, Dorset (postcard)

Description

Identification note: 4 postcards have correspondence on the reverse, of these 3 are stamped and postmarked. One DE.23.05, one JU.15.10 and one 4 SP.56.

Summary: 3 black and white and 4 colour postcards of the "Wilmington Long Man", Eastbourne, Dorset. Black and white postcards: 1 - View along the lane and across fields to the giant in the background. 2 - similar view, includes men riding on and walking beside horses coming up the lane and out of the field. 3 - "The Wilmington Giant, between Lewes and Polegate, looking acorss fields at the foot of the monument with a shepherd and his dog driving a flock of sheep across the field. The reverse bears a short description and history of the figure. Colour postcards: 4 - "The Long Man, Wilmington Nr. Eastbourne" looking down a trck and across fields to the figure in the background. A man sat on top of the hay on a horsede and cart is at the end of the track, a wheelbarrow standing beside a pile of hay, can be seen in the left foreground. 5 - Looking across hedgerows, gate and fields towards the figure in the background. Two men are leaning on the gate looking towards two other men on horseback. 6 - Looking down the track and across the fields to the figure in the background. Three men on horseback, leading a third horse are coming down the lane. A man is walking beside them. In the right midground are a man and young boy leading three horses from a field. 7 - A view looking down frm Wilmington Hill across the valley. A man is driving a six oxen team team up the hill, ploughing.
